Sep 28 – Oct 2, 2026 · the week, gate by gate

Five days, four gates, and a seven-day clock

Options price a ±1.1% week for SPY and ±1.6% for QQQ. Friday's payrolls is the most expensive single day, Monday's open and Wednesday's PCE tie for second. Every gate below asks the same question: does 5.17% on the 10-year hold, or break?

Gates PCE Wed · ISM Thu · Payrolls Fri · Micron Wed night Wildcard Iran's 7-day Hormuz offer runs out ≈ Fri Fed 16 speeches, 10 officials, no coupon auctions Priced SPY ±$8.2 · QQQ ±$11.8 · TLT ±1.5%

The call

  1. Trade the week back-to-front. The options market prices Friday's payrolls as the biggest day (±0.54% on SPY, ±0.75% on QQQ), with Monday's gap and Wednesday's PCE next. Tuesday is the quiet lane. Size for the gates, not the average day.
  2. Hot hurts more than cool helps. An October hike is already ~70% priced. A hot PCE or payrolls print locks it and pushes the 10-year through 5.20%, which hits the AI complex hardest (it is now the most rate-sensitive group: QQQ moves 1.1× TLT, semis 1.6×, Micron 2.1×). A cool print buys a relief rally but does not remove the hike. The skew into each gate is down for high beta.
  3. The two things that can change rates fast sit outside the data. Iran's seven-day offer to reopen Hormuz (made Friday) expires inside this week: a deal takes $8–12 off Brent and 10–15 bp off the 10-year; a lapse puts $110 Brent back in play into the Oct 6–8 coupon auctions. Wednesday's quarter-end rebalancing leans sell-stocks, buy-bonds after a quarter where the S&P rose 3.3% and long bonds fell.

How to read it, and how to use it

What the numbers mean

±0.48% is the one-standard-deviation move options price for that day, backed out of SPY's daily expiries (each day's move is the variance the market adds between one expiry and the next). About two days in three land inside it; the gates are where the third day happens.

est · prev is the consensus estimate and the last print (FMP). Hot and cool are the lines beyond which the market reprices the October meeting, not the lines beyond which the print is "good" or "bad".

Reactions are rate-beta math from the Week Ahead note (QQQ moves ~1.1% per 1% move in TLT, semis ~1.6%; bitcoin moves ~2× QQQ), not forecasts. They say which way and roughly how far, not whether.

How to trade the gauntlet

Size for the gates. Cut high-beta exposure into Wednesday 8:30, Wednesday's close, and Friday 8:30. Tuesday and Thursday are for adding, not for defending.

Own the move where it is cheap. SPY implieds are near 11% annualized for the week; IBIT implieds sit ten points under realized. Straddles and put spreads into the gates cost less than the moves they protect against.

Watch the second reaction. On PCE and payrolls, the first 30 minutes are the algos; the 10-year's level at 10:00 is the signal. Above 5.20% the AI complex leads down; below 5.10% it leads up.

Fed-speak is volume, not signal, unless Williams or Waller move from "reasonable" to "October".
